The other day I got a beautiful reminder.
Lately I’ve been super busy — my system has been stuck in survival mode, my mind racing with anxious thoughts and restless energy. Maybe you know that feeling too…
A few days ago, I was meditating and breathing with a friend when I suddenly realized... I had already taken 5 or 6 breaths while he had just finished one.
That moment hit me.
I was breathing so fast, so shallow — and of course, my thoughts were doing the same.
This was my reminder:
to check in even more with myself.
Not just when I’m doing my practice, but also through the day and when I’m in connection with another person.
You can do your daily yoga and breathwork practice, but if you don’t take it with you through the rest of your day… you’re missing the point.
🫁 Because here’s the thing about the breath —
It’s one of the main keys to our mental, emotional, and physical health.
It’s the only part of our autonomic nervous system we can consciously control, and it directly affects everything else within us.
The faster and higher you breathe, the faster and more thoughts you have, which creates more stress and mental noise.
The slower and deeper you breathe, the more you create calm and stillness in your body and mind.
🐅 And if you look for the primal reasons behind this, it makes perfect sense.
Imagine you’re being chased by a wild animal — your breath speeds up to send more oxygen to your muscles, in case you need to run, and your thoughts race fast so you can by find a quick way to survive or too escape from the danger.
But today, we don’t have wild animals running around our homes or offices.
Yet our bodies still react as if we do.
So this fast breath and fast racing mind no longer help us — they only create more anxiety and make it harder to focus or think clearly.
So maybe, like I was remembered to do again, next time you feel anxious or tense, you can pause for a moment and observe:
How’s my mind doing right now?
How does my body feel?
How am I breathing?
Your breath is a quiet mirror-
reflecting how you move through life💗
